Maha Sivaratri story or Shivaratrior Sivaratri  ,Night of Shiva or “Great Night of Shiva”  is a festival celebrated every year on the 13th night/ 14th day in the Krishna Paksha of the month of Maagha. The festival is principally celebrated by offerings of Bael (Bilva) leaves to the Lord Shiva, all day fasting and an all night long vigil. Ganja is traditionally used as an offering for Lord Shiva and his followers.
Per scriptural and discipleship traditions, the penances are performed in order to gain boons in the practice of Yoga and meditation, in order to reach the goal more swiftly and avoid rebirth.
Maha Shivratri is observed in the honor of the hindu Lord Shiva who was married to Maa Parvati on this particular day.
Shivaratri Fast:
Every year devotees observe Maha Shivaratri fast with devotion and sincerity. Though many go on a diet of fruits and milk, some do not consume even a drop of water all through the day and night of Shivaratri Festival.

Customs and Traditions of Shivaratri Fast:
As a tradition, devotees who are on a strict fast on Shivaratri take bath with the water that is boiled with black sesame seeds to wash away bodily impurities. After putting on fresh new clothes, a devotee visit the nearest Lord Shiva temple to perform the ritual Shiva Linga bath with milk, honey etc. While bathing the Lingam a devotee prays, “O Lord ! I will bathe Thee with water, milk, etc. Do Thou kindly bathe me with the milk of wisdom. Do Thou kindly wash me of all my sins, so that the fire of worldliness which is scorching me may be put out once for all, so that I may be one with Thee-the One alone without a second.”

Legends behind Shivratri:Shiva Lord of Dance
Maha Shivratree is the night where Lord Shiva performed the violent dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction known as Tandava.
Shiva the Lord of Lords
It is believed that Lord Vishnu and Lord Bramha argued over each other divine powers and Lord Shiva challenged both entities. Lord Shiva metamorphosed as the flaming Linga and neither Lord Vishnu nor Lord Bramha could measure the phenomenal linga. Lord Shiva came out of the linga and declared himself as the most powerful. Thus, Maha Shivratree means the grand night of Shiva.
Shiva-ParvatiShiva marriage with Sati was opposed by King Daksha. Followed by a holy sacrifice (yagnya) King Daksha ignored Lord Shiva and the insult was unbearable by Sati. In a gesture of extreme anger Sati jumped into the sacrificial fire. Upon the death of his beloved, Shiva unleashed his fury and performed the Tandava. Gods then feared the end of the universe and revived Sati as a new avatar of Maa Parvati. Shiva- Parvati union is celebrated on Maha Shivratree.

Maha Shivratri is celebrated in a fervent way by Hindus with continuous prayers and mantras all night long. Since ancient time people still believe in the legend behind Maha Shivratree and I would not say that it is only a faith but also a reason for many to live
